Sleep study test sleep apnea symptoms.  The number one reason why most people have a sleep apnea test is symptoms such as stopping breathing when so seeping, daytime sleepiness, and loud snoring.

Bed partners and doctors seem to be the main motivational factor as most patients prefer not to have an overnight sleep study since they assume it’s just how things are like with aging. Little do people know it is not reasonable to continually have the urge to rest or sleep during the day.

The issue of stopping breathing or pauses in breathing due to a collapse in the airway followed by gasping and choking during sleep is called obstructive sleep apnea or OSA.

This type of apnea is the most prevalent in people and treated with positive airway pressure therapy. The second type of apnea is called central sleep apnea. Sleep study test sleep apnea symptoms.

This occurs when there is an issue with brain function (central nervous system), and the body does not make an effort to breathe. Unlike OSA, where the person does have a respiratory effort but has an obstruction, central sleep apnea occurs in a clear air passageway.

There is no loud gasp or breakthrough snort since there is no blockage. Central sleep apnea is very rare to have and is treatable with ventilator type devices.

The third type of sleep apnea is a combination of obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. This is called mixed sleep apnea. A person who has OSA will have an obstructive apnea event, then choke or gasp for air and repeat.

This can occur every few seconds during the night. If the apnea is severe enough, the person will arouse into a lighter stage of sleep.

As the person falls back into a deeper sleep, they may have a few central sleep apnea events. After that, the person will continue having the typical OSA episodes.

It is a cycle that continues throughout the night until the person wakes up in the morning feeling more tired than before going to bed. Mixed apnea is treated most commonly with CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure.

There are some common symptoms most will have in testing positive for sleep apnea. Sleep study test sleep apnea symptoms.

• Excessive daytime sleepiness

• Snoring
• Breakthrough snorting or gasping for air

• Dry mouth

• Morning headaches

If a person has all or some of the symptoms listed above, it does not necessarily mean they will test positive in an apnea test.

The reason is that if a person has less than 5 apnea episodes per hour of sleep, that is considered within a “normal” range. I

f a person apnea tests out having over 5 apnea episodes per hour lasting for at least 10 seconds per event, it will help in a positive diagnosis.

Two other factors needed for a positive diagnosis is a 3% drop in oxygen level along with a brainwave arousal per apnea event.

If a person demonstrates those criteria during the apnea test, the overseeing doctor may determine you have sleep apnea and will require treatment such as weight loss in a combination with CPAP therapy or surgery depending on the person.
